The Japan Foundation in association with Embassy of Japan, ICCR, India-Japan Association, AOTS, FICCI, Shimane International Center, Hamada City and Hamada Chamber of Commerce and Industries, proudly presents the mesmerizing and fascinating Sinto Dance performance of Iwami Kagura. 

About Iwami
Iwami (also known as Sekishū) is one of the three main regions of Shimane Prefecture. Shimane is the best place to experience “real Japan”. The mythology, rich history, stunning scenery and warm-hearted people of this area will enthral any traveller.
Every year in November, 8,000,000 gods from around Japan gather at Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine to plan people’s relationships and fortunes for the coming year. In this “land of gods” visitors can explore its own unique crafts, traditions and delicacies, surrounded by the beauty of the deep blue sea, green mountains, lush rice fields, farmlands, hot springs, temples and shrines.

Taeko is a stressed career woman who escapes to the island. The scene of this story is on "Hamada", an inn on the seashore. Haruna-high school teacher, Sakura-a shop girl who sells shaved ice, Yuji-owner of Hamada, and Yomogi-who is puesuring Taeko, stay together at Hamada. Gradually, a family-like sense of solidarity develops amongst them.

Kenji happens to meet Chiyoko, his mother, who abandoned him long time ago. She is now married to Mamiya and has a teenage son, Yusuke. With subdued feelings of discomfort and resentment towards Chiyoko, Kenji starts living with them to take revenge on Chiyoko, but the presence of Chiyoko as his mother makes him feel confused gradually, and his feelings for her begin to change.

Leaving her alcoholic husband, Eiko takes their son, Masaya away from Tokyo and back to her hometown in Fukuoka. She toils to support him through many years of schooling even after he wastes tie studying art in Tokyo. When Eiko becomes ill with cancer, Masaya invites her to live with him in Tokyo.

ハンセン病の話

私が夏休みに行っていた施設はインドのＮＧＯによって運営されていました。そのＮＧＯは孤児や病気の子どもだけでなく、ハンセン病の患者さんの治療を行うためにも活動しています。この夏まで、インドのハンセン病感染者のことについては知りませんでした。日本では、毎年一人か二人ぐらいしか新しい感染者が出ないそうです。インドでも、一日でも早く、感染者が減る日が来るといいのですが、、まだ時間がかかるかもしれません。
